Immediately, the question arises : ‘ What is independence ? ‘ In modern film & music, independence is broadly taken to mean freedom from external or exclusively commercial considerations and that the freedom of expression of the artist is established in this way. Does this mean that what is actually expressed is ‘independent’ ? This depends on how inherently independent are the views of the artist. Other than to treat all cultures equally and to represent them lucidly, the approach of World Spirit is to have no particular point of view, to try not to intervene between the camera and the culture and, as far as possible, to let the those cultures speak for themselves – through actions, through comment and through live images that need no comment. The individual viewer is then free to form their own opinions. One conclusion the viewer may come to is that, other than the myriad worldly problems fully and responsibly documented and acted on elsewhere, we should also rightly rejoice in the beauty and diversity of our creation The films on Japan, Italy and India are presented in this spirit |
