| The crack of Kabuki woodblocks awakens our inner silence, the shakuhachi blows pure Zen and the O-Jime, the big drum , booms. But then bells are resonating in a Tibetan temple and notes glide like the clarinet in 'Rhapsody in Blue'. A Balinese Gamelan jingle jangles and Pink Floyd like, one is drawn to the sound of sound. | ![]() |

The lightning fingers of a tabla player flow in to a taut Elizabethan minuet and whatever Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Stockhausen sought in modernism, they knew about it a long time ago in Japan - stripped down, laid bare, minimal, rhythm harmony and melody completely full and completely spacious at the same time, all leading to the stillness within the sound... |
a unique collaboration in Japanese
contemporary music
| Nothing could be simpler than the drum and the flute, nothing more fundamental to any of the world's musical forms than such traditional instruments. But nothing is more dramatic than modern Japanese drumming composition and no flute more plaintive, evocative or transporting than the hollowed out bamboo of the shakuhachi. Combine this with creative musicians immersed in their art forms for over 30 years, performing and collaborating worldwide, and a wondrous array of musical flavours emerges. | ![]() |
